Syrian Interior Ministry announces end of clashes in Suwayda
“Clashes within the city’s neighborhoods have been brought to a halt,” al-Baba stated, crediting intensive government efforts for restoring calm.
The Syrian presidency had earlier declared an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in Suwayda following several days of violent unrest. Fighting erupted on July 13 between Bedouin Arab tribes and armed Druze factions in the southern province, escalating tensions in the area.
Israeli airstrikes soon followed, targeting military installations and infrastructure in Damascus. Israel claimed its actions were to protect Druze communities, though most Druze leaders in Syria rejected foreign interference and voiced their support for a unified Syrian state.
Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December, Israel has intensified its air campaign in Syria and officially ended the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, dismantling the long-standing buffer zone between the two countries.
