Georgian parliament states EU using Soviet Union tactics
Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili made the remarks on Friday in response to recent EU threats to suspend Georgia’s accession process and revoke visa-free travel for its citizens. The European Commission has demanded that Tbilisi repeal its controversial ‘foreign agents’ law and improve protections for LGBTQ+ rights, warning that Georgia must return to a “democratic path” by the end of summer.
“It seems that some of the political elite [in Brussels] have taken some skills from the Soviet Union,” Papuashvili said, accusing the EU of “direct interference in the Georgian elections.”
Georgia applied for EU membership in March 2022 and received candidate status in December 2023. However, talks have since stalled, with the Georgian government citing Brussels’ “coercive tone.” While Tbilisi insists it still supports eventual membership, relations have grown tense.
The ruling Georgian Dream party, which won a large majority in October’s election, has long accused Western powers of meddling under the guise of supporting democracy. Officials in Tbilisi have also warned that Georgia could face destabilization similar to Ukraine’s 2014 Maidan uprising due to its neutral stance on the conflict with Russia.
Moscow has echoed Georgia’s concerns, accusing the West of orchestrating unrest in countries that refuse to confront Russia.
